MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Education should be a safe place for students where they are educated about the world. Many adults lack knowledge in various areas due to gaps in their education during their formative years. Some people even normalize being sexist, ableist, abusive, racist, or homophobic. People think it is abnormal if someone says they are asexual or aromantic, and agnostic and atheist. It is due to the lack of knowledge and education is the only place they can gain knowledge about the already existing concepts and emerging concepts.
As a teacher, fostering inclusivity, open-mindedness, and non-judgmental attitudes is paramount. The role of a teacher extends beyond imparting knowledge; it's about shaping individuals to become more empathetic and compassionate human beings. Ultimately, educators play a crucial part in striving for a world with reduced discrimination against minority groups.
My core values as a teacher are to be equal to every student and to be inclusive. This includes students with disabilities, sexual orientations, genders, or anyone that society regards as ‘different’ or ‘abnormal’.
To create a positive learning environment, I focus on building strong relationships with students, showing genuine interest, and encouraging collaboration. Diversity and inclusivity are core principles in my teaching, reflected in inclusive curricula and open, respectful discussions on sensitive topics. Astin (1993) stated the positive impact on student development when diversity is emphasized, and students actively participate in diversity-related activities.
Connecting my beliefs to classroom management theories, my approach aligns with principles such as Culturally Responsive Classroom Management, which values understanding and celebrating cultural diversity. “Culturally responsive classroom management provides a framework for educators to build knowledge, mindsets, attitudes, dispositions, and practices necessary for academic and social success.” (Milner,2019) I also draw from Social Learning Theory by modeling open-mindedness and respect, and also Behaviorism's clear and consistent rules. These theories and beliefs guide me in creating a positive and inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.
