PEER OBSERVATION
My peer was Dinithi Lorensuhewa and in the observation of her teaching demonstration, she effectively demonstrated a variety of classroom management techniques and strategies to engage the students throughout the lesson. The lesson was structured with a lead-in activity, a pre-task warm-up, and a main language practice task.
One of the standout strengths of her presentation was the lead-in activity, a ball game, which was not only creative but also highly engaging. It effectively energized the students and set a positive tone for the lesson. She effectively incorporated a variety of classroom management techniques, including a well-structured warm-up activity, clear and concise instructions, interactive group activities, experiential learning, versatile classroom layout changes, and appropriate use of resources. Her skillful integration of these techniques contributed to a well-engaged and dynamic classroom environment.
The decision to have the students form a circle for the game created a refreshing change in the classroom layout, making the students feel like active participants and, in a sense, like children at play. This innovative approach was successful in grabbing the students' attention and enthusiasm. Additionally, her use of tone and intonation when narrating the story during the lesson was brilliant. It had the power to captivate the students and draw them into the lesson, making it more engaging and enjoyable.
However, there were some areas for improvement in her presentation. One noticeable aspect was time management. The transitions between different activities and changing classroom layouts were somewhat hurried, which led to moments of chaos and noise in the classroom. To enhance the overall flow of the lesson, she could work on managing time more effectively and ensuring smoother transitions.
Despite these challenges, Dinithi effectively engaged the audience by using her tone, intonation, and facial expressions to manage the classroom. She demonstrated clear instructions that helped students quickly adapt to changes in the classroom layout and engage in various activities. Overall, her ability to keep the audience engaged, even during moments of transition, was commendable. Her creative lead-in activity, captivating storytelling, and effective use of classroom management techniques made the lesson a successful and enjoyable experience for the students.
