REFLECTIVE SUMMARY
In my teaching demonstration, I employed a range of classroom management techniques and strategies to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment for the students. Among these, the use of a filler activity, known as the "Hot Seat," stood out as a particularly effective tool. This activity successfully changed the pace of the lesson, captivated students' attention, and encouraged active participation. However, I recognized a potential challenge, especially when teaching younger learners, in managing their excitement and ensuring a smooth transition back to the primary lesson. This experience highlighted the importance of using fillers judiciously, taking into account the age and energy levels of the students.
The incorporation of positive reinforcement, drawing from the principles of Behaviorism, proved to be a motivating factor for students during the "Friends are like Colors" activity. The promise of lollipops inspired creative descriptions using colors and encouraged participation. Nonetheless, it became apparent that the criteria for distributing positive reinforcements could benefit from refinement to ensure fairness and alignment with the learning objectives.
Furthermore, I found that employing code-switching and code-mixing for instructions, especially when delivering complex content to young learners, was highly effective in enhancing comprehension. This linguistic approach simplified instructions and made the lesson more accessible to all students, irrespective of their language proficiency.
The introduction of collaborative pair work during the post-task segment of the lesson was well-received by students. This approach not only fostered a sense of teamwork but also contributed to strengthening student relationships. However, it became evident that some students seemed less engaged during the post-task, possibly due to its relatively lower level of excitement compared to the "Hot Seat" activity.
In reflection, the teaching demonstration was successful in engaging students through creative activities and positive reinforcement. The students actively participated and enjoyed the lesson. However, it also underscored the importance of using classroom management techniques with careful consideration, adapting them to the age group, and maintaining a balance between excitement and focus. Overall, this experience has provided valuable insights into effective classroom management and teaching strategies, which I will apply and refine in future teaching endeavors.
